Turkesterone: The 'Natural Anabolic' That Isn't What It Claims

Turkesterone is sold as the natural anabolic — the compound that supposedly gives you steroid-adjacent muscle gains with none of the downside, no prescription required. It blew up on YouTube and gym TikTok a couple years back, and it's still moving units. So let's do the honest thing and ask the only question that matters: is there any real evidence turkesterone builds muscle in humans? Short answer — no, not for turkesterone specifically. And that's before we get to what's actually in the bottle.

What turkesterone actually is

Turkesterone is an ecdysteroid — a class of steroid-like compounds that plants and insects make. It's found in plants like Ajuga turkestanica. The pitch is that ecdysteroids have anabolic effects without binding to human androgen receptors, so in theory you'd get muscle-building signals without the hormonal side effects of actual steroids. It's a genuinely interesting idea. But 'interesting mechanism in a test tube' and 'proven to work in humans' are two very different things, and the marketing quietly collapses that gap.

The study everyone cites isn't even about turkesterone

Here's the part the ads never mention. The one human trial that gets waved around to sell turkesterone is Isenmann and colleagues (Archives of Toxicology, 2019) — and that study tested ecdysterone, not turkesterone. Different compound.

In that study, 46 young men did 10 weeks of strength training while taking ecdysterone or placebo. The ecdysterone groups showed greater increases in muscle mass and bench press strength, and to the researchers' credit, they verified the supplement was free of anabolic steroid contamination. That's a legitimately interesting result — for ecdysterone. It tells you almost nothing specific about turkesterone, which has its own chemistry and, critically, its own near-total absence of human trials.

There's a small preliminary investigation or two floating around on turkesterone itself, but nothing I'd call robust — no large, well-controlled human RCT showing turkesterone builds meaningful muscle. So when a label leans on 'clinically studied ecdysteroids,' understand what's happening: they're borrowing another compound's data to sell you this one.

Even the ecdysterone study comes with an asterisk. The doses that looked effective in some analyses were far higher than what typical supplements provide, and the field still isn't settled. So 'ecdysterone might do something at a high dose' is a long way from 'this turkesterone capsule will get you jacked.'

  • The core claim rides on ecdysterone data, not turkesterone data.
  • There's no robust human RCT on turkesterone specifically showing it builds muscle.
  • Testing shows a lot of products are under-dosed, not standardized, or barely contain turkesterone at all.
  • 'Ajuga turkestanica extract' on a label tells you nothing about how much active compound is really in there.

You're being asked to pay a premium for a compound with thin evidence, in a product that may not even contain a meaningful amount of it. That's about as rough as a value proposition gets.

That's not a sexy answer, but it's the one that actually works.
